BREAKING: Baseball Team Refuses To Change Their Controversial Name Despite Major Backlash

The Macon Bacon are here to stay.

That name may sound goofy to you, but it's the actual name for a baseball team in Macon, Georgia that plays in the Coastal Plain League.

Now, you certainly wouldn't think of "Bacon" as an offensive name for a sports team. If anything, it's cool to have a team named after a food or drink item of some sort. There aren't enough of those, after all.

But in a letter to the Bacon baseball team, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C. demanded that they change their name. Here are some of the key paragraphs the committee shared in their statement:

"Macon Bacon's glorification of bacon, a processed meat that raises the risk of colorectal
cancer and other diseases, sends the wrong message to fans. I urge you to update the
team's name to Macon Facon Bacon and promote plant-based bacon alternatives, such
as Facon Bacon or Mushroom Bacon, that will help your fans stay healthy.1,2 As for
Kevin, Macon Bacon's mascot, he can reveal that he is actually plant-based bacon.
To help fight cancer and cardiovascular disease in your community, you should
encourage fans to consume delicious, healthful plant-based foods instead of menu
items like 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, Bacon Wrapped Bacon, Steak Cut Bacon, Bacon
Cheeseburger, Bacon Dog, Bacon Loaded Cheese Fries, Bacon Loaded Mac N
Cheese, and Bacon Chips…
As role models in the community, Macon Bacon should set a good example for fans and
stop promoting bacon.

Per FOX News, Bacon team president Brandon Raphael said in a statement that they would not change the name. Raphael ended the statement with, "The Macon Bacon will be sizzling forever and will not consider a name change. Ever."

As well, the official Macon Bacon Twitter account made it clear that they're retaining the team name:

The Macon Bacon were founded in 2018, and they play their home games at Luther Williams Field. They reached the 2019 Pettit Cup Championship series in 2019, falling to the defending champion Morehead City Marlins.

The Coastal Plain League is a "wood-bat" baseball league was founded in 1997, and it features 14 different teams who play in two divisions of seven. The Bacon are the third-youngest team in the league, behind the Tri-City Chili Peppers (there's another food name!) and the Boone Bigfoots.
